The Story of the Shepherd Boy
Blog Article
Deep within the captivating rolling hills, dwelt a young shepherd. His life was mostly unadulterated, simple yet virtuous. His primary duty was to look after his flock of ewes.
Their low murmuring and the whispering of the breezes through the solo tree on the peak were his only co-dwellers. Day after day, guarding his responsibilities instilled in him a feeling of quiet fulfillment.
However, there were occasional moments of solitude, when the shepherd boy would pine for company. During one such occasion because of sheer tedium, the shepherd boy conceived a troublesome scheme.
Narratives of wild beasts hunting on sheep had been heard times and again in the town. So, the boy decided to exploit this fear and played a trick on the inhabitants.
One morning he raced into the village shouting “Wolf! A wolf is preying on my sheep!” The scared villagers rushed up the hills for rescue but discovered no wolf.
The boy laughed at the confusion on their faces. This game laughed for a few days more. But, one noon, a real wolf did charge at the herd. The shepherd boy ran for help, screaming “Wolf, Wolf!” But this time, no one showed up.
Frustrated and alone, the boy struggled against the wolf here but managed to protect only few of his sheep. Heartbroken, he went back to the town only to receive a lesson on honesty and the results of crying wolf.
The story of this shepherd boy has been transmitted generations as a mediaeval parable to teaching the value of honesty, the consequences of lying and the perils of false alarms. Moreover, it stresses how trust once violated, is tough to reclaim. It's a story as relevant today as it was anciently.
